Last month, the Science Centre Singapore hosted the annual Shell NXplorers Project Sharing Day, where nearly 130 students and teachers from 20 secondary schools came together to showcase their progress. This was after months of working with the NXtools, guided by Shell mentors, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) educators from Science Centre and their teachers.
The event was more than a presentation; it was a glimpse into the future. Students demonstrated how curiosity and collaboration can spark real-world impact, with projects ranging from mosquito-repelling smart candles made from recycled coffee grounds to an autonomous floating trash collector and a fruit peel-based filtration system for clean water. Each team showed how innovation, when paired with purpose, can improve lives and protect the environment. The atmosphere buzzed with energy and collaboration as students and mentors exchanged ideas, offered constructive feedback, and inspired one another to refine their problem statements and enhance their solutions in the lead-up to the finale in November
This year also marked the first time Google Singapore joined as a special guest, introducing students to Generative AI (GenAI). Google volunteers demonstrated how
AI can support deeper research, boost creativity and improve presentations, helping students take their ideas to the next level. They also contributed valuable insights on the students’ work.
“NXplorers has inspired me to think innovatively and learn to build solutions from the ground up. It has also equipped me with practical tools that I know will help me in my future career.”
